The average per capita protein availability in Nepal is estimated to be about 69 grams per day, based on historical trends and global data projections. This figure reflects protein available from all dietary sources, including animal products, cereals, legumes, and other foods. However, this does not necessarily represent actual consumption levels due to variations in accessibility, distribution, and individual dietary habits.
Nepal has seen improvements in protein availability over time, bolstered by growth in domestic production of meat, eggs, and milk. For instance, annual per capita meat consumption has reached 18.1 kilograms, while the average Nepali consumes around 61 eggs per year. This progress in protein supply reflects increased production and self-sufficiency in livestock products. Despite these improvements, many people are unaware of their daily protein requirements, and even those who are, often don’t know how to track their protein intake from their daily meals.

Why Protein Matters
Human beings have a specific daily protein requirement to maintain optimal health. This need varies based on factors such as age, activity level, and occupation. Athletes or manual labourers, for instance, require higher protein intake than those with a sedentary job. Despite this, the knowledge about how to calculate protein from common foods remains limited.
Meeting daily protein requirements is simple when you understand the protein content of food and its digestibility. However, making the conscious decision to eat the right foods consistently is a key commitment to long-term health.

Consequences of Protein Deficiency
Protein deficiency can result in various health issues, including stunted growth, weakened immune system, loss of muscle mass, hormonal and metabolic disorders, hair skin and nail problems, fatigue and weakness, and increased risk of malnutrition. This in-turn could lead to reduced life expectancy, accelerated ageing, and increased vulnerability to diseases. Addressing protein deficiency is crucial to ensuring a healthy population and a strong workforce in Nepal.

About the “Right to Protein Run”:
The “Right to Protein Run” aims to raise awareness about the importance of protein in our diets, educate participants on how to calculate their daily protein intake, and encourage healthy eating habits. The event also aligns with Nepal’s commitment to building a healthier and more active population. Nepal Veterinary Association has been continually working with the Nepal Athletics Association which is also the official technical partner for the event, ensuring its smooth and professional execution.
